GARDEN WAYSIDE SHRINE
__________________________________
In 1979, John Pozzobon traveled to Schoenstatt, Germany, and upon his return to Brazil, he was inspired to build wayside shrines of our Lady of Schoenstatt like the ones he saw in Germany. Since this humble beginning, the building of Schoenstatt Wayside Shrines has spread worldwide. A Schoenstatt Wayside Shrine features the Mother Thrice Admirable (i.e. Mother of God, Mother of the Redeemer, and Mother of the Redeemed) picture and are constructed for outdoor use. These shrines range in size from simple roadside or garden markers to small chapels.
There are four larger outside wayside shrines and approximately 229 smaller, garden wayside shrines across Ohio. These shrines express the desire of a person, couple, family, or group to make the MTA more visible outside their home and in their neighborhood. A place to stop, pray, and be reminded of Jesus and our Blessed Mother.
Ideally, wayside shrines are blessed in a daughter shrine. If this is not possible, the shrine should be blessed by a Catholic priest. There is usually a second blessing by Schoenstatt members at the site where the individual shrine is placed. It is recommended that people gather close to the wayside shrine on the 18th of each month to pray the rosary as a symbol of unity with the shrine, enabling the current of graces that flow from the shrine to reach the most remote places. (The 18th day of every month serves as a reminder of October 18, 1914. On this date, Father Joseph Kentenich and about twenty seminarians sealed the very first covenant of love with the Mother of God). It is hoped that every wayside shrine becomes a fruitful seed to enkindle the world with the fire of the covenant of love!
